A weak Democratic candidate and low voter turnout in 2014 led to the election of Republican Charlie Baker in historically liberal Massachusetts … further proof that even in the bluest of states, where voter suppression is virtually nonexistent, citizens must organize and take action to get out the vote … or learn to live with a reactionary government. Elections do have consequences!
Open Letter to Mass. Governor Charlie Baker
Governor, let the Syrians in.
Shame on you for saying you do not want Syrian refugees in Massachusetts. We are a land of freedom beckoning to those who yearn to be free. That is our heritage, that is our belief, and that is the morally right thing to do.
Indeed, your refusal to welcome immigrants who have escaped the killing fields at great risk – to keep them homeless and in poverty – is the very best way to turn more Muslims against the U.S. And remember, they are fleeing a Mideast destabilized by George W. Bush’s reckless Iraq War.
And before you say it, no, we don’t know exactly how homeland security checks and rechecks each asylum seeker, but the process takes up to two years. As such, we are willing to take the small risk that some mother, child, and father are actually terrorists – and able to thwart two years of investigation – to give them the chance they deserve today.
By turning them away, here is the message you send: The terrorists have won. And our country is too scared to live up to our values and principles.
Shame on you Governor Baker.
