As the New York Daily News headline screamed the day after the San Bernardino massacre, “God isn’t fixing this.” Our only hope lies in electing people who have the political will to take on the gun manufacturers – who have made a profit on every firearm used to murder Americans from Columbine to Sandy Hook to San Bernardino – and limit the sale of guns, especially assault weapons. With a month to go in 2015 we’ve already suffered 462 firearm deaths and 1,314 injuries. Yes, gun manufacturers must be having a banner year.
But taking on the gun lobby, which is largely funded by gun manufacturers, is not enough. We also need to elect leaders who will take on the purveyors of hate, such as Rupert Murdoch’s vile New York Post (see below), whose rants inflame instead of inform and make murder, not debate, an increasingly common form of political discourse. So, yeah, we’ve heard enough empty platitudes from the likes of Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Lindsey Graham, and Paul Ryan (see below). It’s time for real leadership in this country, and 2016 is the year we can make it happen. Until we stand up to these people, we will continue to be a Nation at Risk.
